Usual Suspects
I’m currently working with, and writing music for, my own band Usual Suspects, a jazz quintet which I formed in the autumn of 2008. Not only are the members some of my favorite musicians, they are also guys I like to hang out with, something I think makes the music better and the joy of playing together even bigger.
The music has it’s base in modern jazz, but with a lot of tweaks and twists it always takes new directions and you can never be sure what happens next.
Our concerts are filled with energy, playfulness and joy, and our goal is always to make you feel that too.
Feel free to listen to some songs of mine recorded with Usual Suspects during spring 2009 in the player on the right!
Jens Filipsson – saxophone & compositions, Efraim Törnfeldt – guitar, Edvin Nahlin – piano, Niklas Fernqvist – upright bass, Sebastian Ågren – drums.
Neighbourhood
Neighbourhood was formed by trombone player Kristian Persson in 2008. The music is a mind-blowing and energetic mix of jazz, funk and soul with influences from artists such as Herbie Hancock, The JB´s, Fela Kuti, Roy Hargrove & Soulive. The repertoire offers a wide spectrum of hard-hitting and funky songs to soft and gentle ballads.
Neighbourhood is one of the favorites among the bands I’m playing with. Always great spirit in the band and it’s so easy playing together with Kristian & Jonne in the horn section. Neighbourhood is a band that always goes ‘all in’, no matter if it’s a concert or a rehearsal, and that’s the way I like it.
We’re right now spending a lot of our time in the studio and will release our debut album in spring 2010. While waiting for that you can check out the videos on the right, recorded at Jazz Club Fasching in Stockholm in the autumn of 2009.
Kristian Persson – trombone, Jonne Bentlöv – trumpet & flügelhorn Jens Filipsson – saxophones & flute, Edvin Nahlin – keys, Aleks Brdarski – electric bass, Sebastian Ågren – drums.
Jerry the Cupboard
A few years ago saxophone player Thomas Backman called me up and wanted to have a jam session. He also called bass player Clas Lassbo and drummer Calle Rasmusson. The music was there from the first note to the last, and afterwards Thomas decided this should be a band. Jerry the Cupboard was born.
We’re playing music composed by Thomas, and it’s hard to put a label on the music. Jazz that span from soft, gentle and minimalistic to hard and aggressive, all the time with a Swedish touch. Something like that!
Have a listen in the player on the right to see what it is I’m rambling about!
Thomas Backman – alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet & baritone saxophone, Jens Filipsson – alto saxophone & baritone saxophone, Clas Lassbo – accoustic bass, Calle Rasmusson – drums.
